Hi. My name is Ruth. I grew up in Yelm Washington and graduated from Yelm High School at the top of my class in 1999. I attended Seattle Pacific University and graduated with honors earning my degree in Exercise Science in 2003. My husband I with our two children live in Puyallup and are active in our community.
I began running in middle school and continued to develop my love and talent for it through high school and college. In high school I competed at the top of our distance team, going to State
in the 2 mile and Cross Country multiple times. In college I earned a spot on the traveling squad and competed well at the regional level in Cross Country and in the 10,000m and 5,000m in
After college I continued running competitively and worked at a personal training studio in Seattle before purchasing our home in Puyallup in 2005 where I began working at a physical therapy clinic. My time working at OSSR (Olympic Sports and Spine Rehabilitation) was very educational and I made connections with brilliant physical therapists that I still look to for advice regularly. It was during that time that I also earned my CSCS certification through the NSCA, one of the world's top ranked certifying agencies in the field.
After having my son in 2006 I began working at the Mel Korum YMCA as a Health and Wellness Coach, providing Y members a service to learn how to use equipment and set up basic training routines. Then after having my daughter in 2008 I transitioned into sub-contracting as a Personal Trainer at the Y, giving me the opportunity to take the more personalized approach with my clients I longed for. My clientele grew quickly and I became a well-known and sought after trainer, known for deeply caring about my clients, and I am still working with several of the same clients I began with in 2009.
Although I really enjoyed personal training, my own running career was thriving after turning Elite in 2010 and competing in the 2012 Olympic Trials Marathon. My passion for coaching runners was growing and so I earned my USATF Level 1 certification in 2013 along my journey to create my own coaching business, a dream I had since high school. In 2014 I launched Perkins Coaching with the desire to work with runners wanting to train wise, run fast, and makes their dreams a reality. I had already been working with runners but found myself limited as a personal trainer with what I could offer in a gym setting. Through Perkins Coaching I am able to offer my clients workouts on the track, road, and trail, prehab and functional strength training, access to physical therapy and massage therapy, and many other opportunities specific to running.
Throughout the process of building Perkins Coaching I have continued my own running journey, writing my own training plans while having my coach offer valuable advice and encouragement. I have won many local races, ranked top 10 in multiple national championships and competed in both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Trials Marathon. I'm still chasing PR's right alongside my clients and so you can trust that the coaching techniques I use are the most advanced and trusted techniques available while also being creative to meet the exact coaching style each of my clients needs.
Hi, my name is Kelly. I grew up in Key Peninsula (WA) and I've been running since I was young. As a kid I was always active playing outside with my brothers. I began running competitively in Middle School. Joining the track team was a wonderful outlet for my highly competitive personality. I tried out middle distance, sprints, relays and jumps. I felt most successful and enjoyed the longer distances. In high school I ran Cross Country and the distance events in Track for Peninsula High School. I noticed a big improvement in my endurance and speed through the consistency of the training we did. After high school I attended and graduated with high honors from Everett Community College. There I competed in Cross Country and Track where I was honored to be one of the top competitors on the team. I became a student of my sport by reading running books and asking countless questions regarding our training. After college I have done some road and trail racing in distances ranging from 5k to half marathon. I also began to transition into some coaching roles at Stadium High School, Pacific Lutheran University and Peninsula High School.
I am passionate about coaching because of the positive impact I can have on others by bringing joy to my work and inspiring my athletes to achieve their goals. I believe there is great strength in having a positive mental outlook paired with consistent and wise training. I love running and I am committed to investing my time and talent in the athletes I coach as well as contiuing to pursue my own athletic goals.
Although running is a major passion for me I have some other hobbies I enjoy - creating art, music, and reading are some of them. I also love to spend time with my husband and family,
This quote embodies my heart for coaching: "We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline and effort." -Jesse Owens
